EMDR is a powerful therapy technique which has been very successful in helping people who suffer from trauma, anxiety, panic, post traumatic stress disorder and other disturbing memories. EMDR is the abbreviation for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing which has been getting more attention as a form of treatment for PTSD with combat veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Until recently, these conditions were difficult to treat and time consuming to treat. EMDR is considered a breakthrough therapy because of its simplicity and the fact that it can bring quick and lasting relief for most types of emotional distress. When disturbing experiences happen they are stored in the brain with all the sights, sounds, thoughts and feelings that accompany it. When a person is upset or emotionally overwhelmed, the brain seems unable to process and release the experience as it would normally. Therefore the negative thoughts and feelings of the event are "trapped" in the nervous system. However, the distress lives on in the nervous system where it causes disturbances in the emotional functioning of the person. In fact unresolved traumatic experiences are subject to reactivation whenever a current stressor happens to remind one of the the earlier trauma. EMDR does two things, first, it "unlocks" the traumatic memories stored in the nervous system and second, it helps the brain to successfully process and release the experience. The end result being that one can recall the old memories traumatic memories but with little or no emotional disturbance about it. The process also helps change negative distorted, thoughts created in response to the trauma such as "I'm worthless", or "I'm unlovable, or "I'm powerless". In short EMDR can free you from your emotional prison of the past so that you can again be fully alive in the present.
